Over time, the number of objects grew from eight to 20 to 40, and each was selected for its distinct auditory properties. As Tudor explained in the original program notes, “Each instrument was set into sonic vibration through the use of electromagnetic transducers. The sound materials used to program the instruments are collected from natural scientific sources and are specific to each instrument, exciting their unique resonant characteristics. The excited resonances are routed to a conventional audio system by the use of one or more pick-ups attached to each instrument.”

    • Thanks for the comment, as it’s important to clarify here that what these interviews are discussing is electromagnetic sound art, which was created, using specialised radio equipment, to intercept electrical interference from sources like lightning, live mains electricity, and even the sun, etc. When (David) Tudor refers to “electromagnetic transducers” (sic), what he means is what the rest of us would call guitar pick-ups! If you cast the net wide enough, common-or-garden gadgets like guitar pick-ups, microphones and loudspeakers are all “electromagnetic”, in the sense that they involve electricity and magnets; it would be absurd however to, on that basis, describe eg – electric guitar music as “electromagnetic sound art”. Likewise, the impulses that Tudor was using these “transducers” to amplify were SOUNDS, from conventional instruments, not radio noise from the sun etc. Nice try!
